- Read with your child nightly - Have your child spend a minimum of 30 minutes reading to you each night. If your child is not at an age in which they are reading take some time out to read to them.
- Ask your child to tell you what happened in his or her own words.
- Ask them questions about the story.
- If at any point your child gets tripped up on a word make sure that once they pronounce it correctly they go back and read the entire sentence to make sure they understand the definition of the word and the context in which it is used in the sentence.
- Stop reading at some point before the end of the story and ask them what they think will happen next and why.
