Normally when kids get home from school they waste a whole lot of time doing nothing. Playing video games, texting, on social media, playing with friends, etc. It is in the best interest of the child and their studies to come in take about a 30 minute break and then immediately get started on their homework. Make sure you have a set location for studying or homework and try to avoid bedrooms without a desk. The kitchen table or home office works great for homework.
For younger students you may want to set a timer for each assignment and then give them a short break between assignments to stretch, grab a drink, whatever they need to do to give their minds a short break.
